We’re talking about everything from exercising your way to dreamland, to creating the perfect bedtime routine, and more! So, grab your favorite blanket and let’s jump right into the top 7 ways to get better sleep.
1. Exercise
Yes, that’s right. Get up and move! Daily exercise has been proven to result in quality sleep and also helps you fall asleep faster. Exercise doesn’t have to look like lifting weights or run as fast as you can on a treadmill. Getting your body moving by cleaning the house, taking your dog for a daily walk, or having a dance party with your kids are all forms of moving your body and result in some benefits. Take your time
2. Create a Routine
Habits are important and simple things like washing your face and brushing your teeth will signal to your brain that it is time for some much needed sleep. Make up a new habit such as reading in bed 20 minutes before falling asleep or continue on with your current routine and make it feel more intentional. By creating a routine you are setting yourself up for success to get the best quality of sleep.
3. Find Ways to Relax
We all know that our days can be busy and in the evening it is more important than ever to find a way to refresh and rejuvenate. Find ways to relax such as coloring, spending time with a loved one, or playing a new game on your phone or Nintendo Switch, my favorite game is Disney’s Dreamland and Mario Kart. It is important to find ways to give your brain a “break” and you know yourself better than anyone else, what is it that makes you happy and relaxed? Try and make this a priority for better sleep!
4. Listen to Lofi Music
Music is very powerful, it has the ability to excite us, motivate us, or calm us. Take advantage of some Low, lo-fi music is known for its tempo – usually between 60bpm and 90bpm – can also help calm stress and anxiety. Letting your brain decompress will allow you to have much higher quality sleep and it also sets the mood for any other stress reducing activity you choose. Check out my favorite Lofi music on Spotify – Lofi Fruits.
5. Declutter and Prepare for the Next Day
If you are like me and prefer to go to sleep with a clean home it might actually help you sleep better mentally and physically to have a clean space. Before getting settled down for the evening, try setting a timer for 20 minutes and do a quick cleaning of your kitchen, living room, or bedroom. Having a nice place to rest at nice will help you feel ready for turning your brain off and ready to crush the next day.
6. Set an Intention/Pray
Setting an intention or practicing prayer can allow you to take a minute to tap into Gratitude which is a direct positive mind booster. Gratitude focuses on taking time to be appreciative for the smaller things such as the shoes on your feet and green grass outside to big things like family, friends, and everything else that is special to you. When we practice gratitude, we unlock a new part of our brain which enables us to set anxiety and worry aside and dive in to our biggest acknowledgments for what we love most.
7. Quiet Time
Being in a place of silence or stillness will bring a moment of peace to your body and soul. Feel free to pick a cozy spot in your home or somewhere you feel safe and listen to a guided meditation or take a few moments to do some deep breathing. Quietness can help you settle down and get ready for the rest of your evening. We are in such a fast paced environment these days and some much needed quiet time might be the best medicine you need to reach that ultimate quality of sleep.
